Victims of Craigslist Scams Beware...

I was minutes away from being scammed by someone on craigslist. I wanted to explain my situation in hopes that it can help someone else from falling into the same trap. My problem is that I first think that most people are inherently good, but I am surely mistaken.

I listed a piece of furniture on craigslist for $400.00...an old dining room hutch that is in great condition. I got a response a few days later stating that some guy 'richard beks' (im assuming is a fake name) wanted to buy it at the listed price and that he would send me a check, wait for me to cash it and arrange a date for his movers to come pick up the piece. He stated he was going to throw in a few extra dollars so that I could pay the movers (i assumed about $50-$100) A few days later, a fedex package arrived with a check for $2540.00 from a company listed as 'On-Demand Publishing' out of a Wells Fargo bank account from the West Coast. The signature said 'Richard Beks' After calling Wells Fargo to make sure the account was valid and that the funds were available, the bank could only tell me that the account was in an open status. I was going to try to cash the check at a wells fargo bank only to find out those banks exist only on the west coast (i live on east coast), so this was impossible. I was a bit suspicious because I didnt want to get involved in anything that wasnt my business or concern and didnt feel right cashing all of that money. So, I called my bank and my local police department to make sure I wouldn't get into trouble for cashing a check that far exceeded my listed price. I also went onto craigslist and asked for advice from anyone that has ever heard of anything like this before. A day later I got a response from all three sources telling me that this was a HUGE SCAM and that people are falling for it everyday.

This is what happens when you deposit or cash this man's check. Deposit check, withdrawal excess money to pay the fake movers, movers come by to pick up your sale item, you give them the money, they leave, and 2-3 weeks later the bank tells you that the check has bounced or is an invalid check and not only are you out the full amount of the check, you are also left with NO sale item. If I had gone through with cashing/depositing that check of his, i wouldve lost all of that cash and my dining room hutch would be gone.

I am hoping that we the people can start a list of craigslist scammers to help others stay away from these crappy people and their crappy scams. Since then, I have been contacted by two other men with similar guarantees of purchasing my item, paying for it in check and then screwing me weeks later.

Please help me build a list to warn other honest sellers...

Here begins my list:

FIRST KNOWN SCAMMER:
Richard Beks
refurbishedip@aol.com
Wells Fargo Bank check from this company:
On-Demand Publishing

This was his first, middle and last email to me:
Hello, Thanks for the swift response, just to let you know that am okay with the condition and price of the item, am ready for its purchase and my form of payment will be by sending you Check via UPS next day delivery. I'll be responsible for the pick-up and the pick up money will be included in your payment to avoid delay and to enable pick up company to schedule an appropriate time for the pick-up at your location after check has been cashed,as i have other properties to be moved alongside with yours. I would have really love to come for the viewing but due to my work frame that might not be possible, but if you have the pics, might want to have a good look. Please do get back to me with your full name and address including your cell and land number so i can make out payment. Regards.Rich.

Hello, Good to read from you with details, I presume we seal this a deal? I'll contact my secretary so that payment will be issued out to you, please i want you to consider the item sold and keep off other interested buyers that would make inquiry about it cos am ready for it's purchase. As i've let you know that pick up and mover's money will be included in your payment, so upon cash of check, you'll make the pick up money payable to the movers and the movers would arrange appropriate time for pick up at your location cos i've other properties to be moved.I believe this is based on trust.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.Regards!

Hey, I told you initially that the movers fee will be included in the payment, the overpayment is meant to cover the cost of shipment for the item alongside my other properties including tax and insurance plus the movers fee. You have to understand that i've tried all possible means to make sure payment reaches you in a timely manner as i have some other properties ready to be moved alongside your item... Will really appreciate your effort by acting accordingly as agreed, upon the cash of the check, deduct your money for the item and make the rest funds available to the movers coordinator so they can arrange for the pick up of my other properties. Your effort will really be appreciated. Sorry for any inconveniences and thanks for your understanding.Regards.

These people are awful scam artists who have duped many out of their hard earned money. I spoke to the local police department and he advised me to bring in the check and file a police report. He also advised me on what to say to this man to cancel our agreement.

I hope this helps even one person...you can't seem to trust anyone and that is quite sad.

Thanks for the resource--I'm going to contact craigslist and AOL to see what I should do about this guy.

  3. THANK YOU for posting this. My roommate put my couch up on craigslist (with my permission), and he was saying oh this guy is going to have movers come and pick it up as soon as he sends a check. Right then and there red flags went up, but I figured, whatever. Just got home to find a UPS envelope and a check signed, Richard Beks. The name on the package said "Hoffolicious Ltd". Anyway thanks for posting this and confirming my belief that this is indeed a scam.

Thanks for the prompt response to my inquiry. I hope it is in a good
condition as stated in the ad as I am interested in making an outright
purchase. I would have loved to come take a look myself but I am quite
busy and hope you understand? I would be making an instant purchase
but if there is anything wrong, you can kindly let me know and we can
fix things up. I wouldn't mind adding $20 for you to take down the ad
from craigslist and also to be assured that it is mine.

I will be paying you with a Certified Check and it is going to be sent
to you via courier service which will be out for the mail as soon as I
    get your details for payment.

Here are the details needed to issue your payment:

**Full name to be on the payment.
**Your home or office address which the payment will be delivered to.
**Home and Cell phone number if available.

I will be responsible for the pick-up as pick-up money will be
included in your payment to avoid delay and to enable the mover
schedule an appropriate time for the pick-up at your location after
check has been cashed, as I have other properties to be moved
    alongside with yours.

Thanks and I will be waiting to hear from you real soon.

    Hello,
Thanks for your message and the address you sent........I would want
you to know that due to shipping and insurance.....and that a shipping
company is coming to pick up this item from you.You will receive a
check of $3850 then you will deduct the normal cost price from it
    plus
a bonus of $100 for your sincerity and stress in forwarding the shipping
charges which is the balance/extra via Western Union/Money Gram to the
    shipper who will
come for the pick up and this must be done in good faith. The check
has been dispatched to you via ups/dhl and i will get back to you with
    the
tracking numbers for you to be able to know when it will deliver.

More so,the money you are sending to my shipper is covering the
shipping charges of your item together with my other items that i have
already paid for and they are all ready for pick up but i deliberately asked
my shipper to hold on till I finish with your payment so that the shipper
will be able to pick up and deliver my items once and for all.

I will like to read from you concerning the appropriate time for the
pickup that will suits you most as i don't want to disturb your daily
programs..Looking forward to hearing a favorable response from you.

    Regards

  14. I received an email from Jim Berger for my photography supplies that were up on CL. I was suspicious about the email and about the certified check (especially because in the previous email I told him it was CASH ONLY) but my parents said it would be alright if he waited to pick the stuff up after the check cleared. It was a very formal email. so I emailed him back with my only requirement and the information. after that I received the same email again saying i need your info blah blah blah from "cb12" chun.lee34@gmail.com. this made me even more suspicious because everything was the same in the email. as in copy and pasted. I waited for a response and got a very informal email with tons of mistakes and such. I talked to my dad about it and he said whatever. but I googled his name and found this blog. I told my parents about it and they told me to print everything out and when the check gets here to my house we are going to the police. Im not sure if they will be able to do anything, but it is worth a try. Im so glad I found this blog or I might have fallen for the scam, (but a large sum of money would have alerted my parents and I wouldnt have let the "movers" take my stuff without the cleared check.

  29. You just made my day by posting this blog. I have been scammed for the past week about a pair of boots I posted. This sucks, but I'm glad to see I wasn't the only victim of this. Thank you for sharing the stories with me, but I must ask. Would it be wiser to put a cell number and take the risk of random creepy people calling or messageing you instead of an email? What did any of you turn to for a solution?

p.s. my scammer was uswingsx3@gmail.com and uswingsx5@gmail.com and her name was Ashley Bowling.

  52. Recieved emails from a few sources regarding my inquiries on CraigsList. The names are different but the way they write their information and instructions are all the same. The names and email addresses of those in which I had recieved emails from are as follows:

    Lori Corey - LCorey20013@gmail.com

    Jordan Quick - jordanytp@gmail.com

    Jesus Antonio - gavilan2983@hotmail.com

    (no name) - vanessarjv@gmail.com

Unfortunately, I have fell into this scam and now I supposedly owe my bank $2,990.00
I called the bank this morning and asked them what I would have to do if I came in with a CERTIFIED BANK CHECK close to $3,000.00 and the woman on the phone told me they would need to verify it first before I could use the funds. However, that is not what my bank did.

I deposited the check on a Friday and then I withdrew the money on the following day. The bank teller should have ALERTED me about this ongoing scam with banks and consumers and I probably would have waited or contacted the police at that time instead of after the fact.

Anyways, now the bank is telling me that I am responsible for the amount because I endorsed the check. But my argument is: If they verified the check and put those funds into my account, then I am not the only one at fault here. The bank is at fault to.

Has anyone had to deal with this, and what should I do? The bank wants me to pay the money back to them but I don't have ANY money. They said that they would close my accounts, (which I'm perfectly alright with now that I know what kind of business this is that do not look out for their customers), but they would send that amount to a collection agency and pretty much destroy my credit for the rest of my life.

If anyone HAS dealt with this unfortunate circumstance and has possibly gone to court, please help me and give me some information about how I should expect the outcome to be. Is it worth having my father put out money for a lawyer? Thank you.

  53. Got a similar email from troygrt@gmail.com. He was trying to buy a clock off craigslist. Sent a fake pay pal letter stating that my payment of $1650.00 would be released once I sent $500 by Western Union to:

    Name: Iganacio Hernandez
    Address:1947 Dogwood Ave,
    City:Anaheim
    State:California
    Zip Code:92801.
    Country: United State.

I obviously didn't. He texted me that I was trying to scam him. LOL
The Pay Pal e-mail looked real except instead of service@paypal.com, it was Service@PayPal.com. Be careful out there.

As i've let you know that pick up and mover's fee will be included in
your payment, so upon cash of check, you'll make the pick up money
payable to the movers via MoneyGram and i would arrange
appropriate time with the movers for pick up at your location as i have
other properties to be moved.I believe this is based on trust.

    Thanks for your understanding.

Hello, sorry for the slight delay caused by the usps but here is the tracking number which shows the check would be delivered to you today #9405501699320003545945 ,pls be on a look out

I spoke to my bank and they said there would be a 5 day hold on the funds but for me to tell the person it would be 10 days once the check went thru the normal bank procedure and comes back unpaid I am to take it to our local police and press fraud charges. Maybe if we all took the time to do this we could get these people registered with the banks as fraud and that way they could alert someone who may not catch the scam....as we all know that we work hard for our money for some just to scam us out of it because most of us are trusting people......but just remember as the saying goes and to be on the safe side IN GOD WE TRUST ALL OTHERS PAY CASH.............

I'm not posting my responses because I, uh, feel pretty stupid. The first clue was the "mis-typed phone number" in the original email, and although I got vaguely suspicious early on, I was on the verge of going through with the deal until I got the last email, at which point all my alarm bells went off and I googled the term "craigslist scams." I quickly cut off communication. Clearly I should have trusted my original instincts. of course, the very fact that I am posting my experience means that scammers can view it and adjust their pitches accordingly, but what can ya do? - FM

Hi, Sorry i'm afraid i just checked my daily/work schedule and coming to view won't fit due to a busy work frame but would appreciate if you could email me pictures. Also to let you know that I'm okay with the condition/price but what would you consider as your bottom dollar??.. Ready for the purchase and willing to add an extra $20 to avoid other buyers and reserve for me. My form of payment will be via business or personal check which could be cashed instantly or deposit for clearance and after that we could proceed with the pick up arrangements so you can be rest assured. I would be responsible for the pick-up as i have other belongings to be moved alongside and to avoid any delays, the movers/pick-up fees would be added to the payment.. If you're okay with the form of payment kindly write back with necessary details (name, address and phone # to discuss further) so i can make out payment asap via FedEx or USPS next day delivery .

    Alex Fields.

    --------------------------

Ok.. Just to clarify, you are not going to be responsible for the shipment, what I said however was that the moving fee will be added to your payment and will not affect your money for the item. The movers will only contact you and come for the pickup at your location after you receive payment and at your preferable time. Also, as stated in previous email .. I could only make out payment via business or personal check which could be cashed instantly or deposit for clearance and after that we could proceed with the pick up arrangements so you can be rest assured. If you're okay with the form of payment kindly write back with necessary details (name and address) to be on the check so i can make out payment ASAP.

Also as stated in previous email that pick-up/mover's fee will be added to your payment and after cashing the check, you'll make the pick up money payable to the movers and they can arrange an appropriate time for pick up at your location as i have other belongings to be moved alongside. I will keep you posted with the usps/fedex tracking number and the movers details. I believe this is based on trust.

  73. I have received an email from frank Travis who lives out of state but wanted to send me extra money for the movers coming to pick up the package but I haven't received the check yet? Did you contact him to cancel the payment or how did everyone deal with it before or after the payment had been received?

    1. I entertained one of these scams for a while and I couldn't figure out what they're trying to do. He offered to pay me extra so I could pay his mover for him, yeah sure. I have him my PayPal handle and nothing ever came of it.

It smelled fake from the start but I was curious. He never asked for any sensitive information, never asked me to front any money, it just fizzled out. All bait and no switch. Weird.

  78. New scammer...using the name LUKE GREG out of Wisconsin. I asked him for his address and he gave me a street address in Wisconsin. I then Googled that address and discovered that a family with a different name lives there.

I tend to be too trusting of people, and my thought was "sure, I'll pay the mover when he picks up, no big deal."

Unfortunately, I have already deposited the check and withdrawn the cash ($2,000+). HOWEVER, I have not yet done anything with the money. I have every dollar in my possession. I will be stopping at the local police department and the bank to ask advice on what to do next.

    Again....LUKE GREG....WISCONSIN.

  83. I think I’m in the middle of trying to get scammed. Such similar story but I was suspicious from the beginning. Her name is Jammie Kane. I’m still playing along with it because I was just curious what that bogus check looks like that she’s apparently mailing to me. She’s sending me an $1800 check because She wants me to pay the movers $1200 and my item is $600. Can any of these checks be cashed? What if I can cash the check? I wish these people can get caught.

  84. Almost fell for it. Thank you all for these postings. You saved me hassles/time and above all money!

got email from Peter Ortiz "Do you still have the item available?whats the present condition and last selling price kindly get back to me by text on this number 469 205 2370. PETER".

Same story as above. I just wanted a certified check for $200.00 but instead sent me a business check for $2,150.00

"Please pay the movers for me. They are local in your city and will not move my furniture before payment. Ive told them that you will be paying them cash for the outstanding balance. Please keep additional $50.00 for your inconvenience"

I did not feel comfortable with this transaction. The Check Arrived via Priority Mail for $2,150.00

    Issued by:
    Avantage Property Management
    1000 5th Street, Suite 1316

    From:
    Wells Fargo Bank
    1200 Lincoln Road
    Miami Beach, FL 33139

    Hope they Choke dead!

  85. I should have seen this sooner! Lost several hundred to someone who called himself David Luko. Was sent TWO checks but luckily only cashed one. Still bounced back but too late; after I thought I had transferred money from said check but really was giving this guy my savings. Was confused because I was being texted and called by two people claiming to be the same buyer and kept saying conflicting things, confusing and pressuring me into sending some money to this guy through Zelle. Police or Wells Fargo didn’t help get my money back, unfortunately. Be on the lookout for Lukodavid7@gmail.com.
